Claudius II Gothicus, also known as Marcus Aurelius Claudius, was a Roman emperor from 268 to 270 AD, renowned for his military victories against the Goths and his efforts to stabilize the Roman Empire during a tumultuous period.

 

Early Life and Rise to Power

Claudius II was born on May 10, 214 AD, in Dardania, which is part of modern-day Serbia. He served in the Roman army and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a military tribune. His military prowess was recognized during the reign of Emperor Gallienus, and he played a significant role in the conspiracy that led to Gallienus' assassination in 268 AD. Following this, Claudius was declared emperor by the army.
